Everyone thinks of changing the world, but no one thinks of changing himself. -Leo Tolstoy
It’s only natural to doubt ourselves when we begin shifting our lives in a different direction. It’s often dissatisfaction, or simply a greater pull from another direction that starts this type of movement, but how do we know when it is actually time to make change?
It’s true that if we waited for the right time to do anything, we would be waiting forever, but it’s equally true that sometimes it just isn’t the best time to make any kind of move.
Looking to make some changes? Here are a few tips about how to mix it up in your own life.
Intuition. Listen to it.
If you are feeling pulled toward something, listen. If your intention is to shift your life so it begins feeling more like the life you are meant to live, follow whatever feels right, that feeling is the clearest sense that you are leading yourself closer to what you are seeking. If you are uncertain of what feels right to you, do your best to strip yourself of your expectations of what you think your life should look like. As you are peeling away the layers, notice what is left and consider why you want to hold onto it.
Resistance. Observe it.
On the way to discovering and building the life you want, you will encounter obstacles. Some of those challenges will be externally imposed and out of your control. These can be managed and overcome with consistent effort and attention. The internal challenges, your resistance, may be harder to overcome. Resistance is not the same as intuition. It is not listening to or honouring your deepest self. In fact, resistance is usually nothing more than fear. So when it comes up, let it be. By all means, make some space to feel what you need to feel, but don’t let it rule you and definitely don’t let it stop your action.
Trust. Lean into it.
When you’ve reached a point in your life where you are willing to make major changes for the sake of pursuing what feels like your best life, it isn’t a mistake. It isn’t random. And it isn’t a single flash of inspiration. It is the culmination of a lot of work you have done and a knowing that you are dedicated to what is best for you. You are going to take care of yourself, no matter what. This is the most solid space we can build from. As such, you must trust. Trust that if you are truly moving from a place of deep desire, and your desire seeks to contribute to this world, without harm to others, you are on the right path. The specifics of the right path may or (likely) may not be revealed all at once. It doesn’t really matter. What does matter is that you trust you will find what you are seeking as long as you keep trying.
There is so much more than what we can see going on. Connecting to your intuition, your fear, and your purpose will awaken you to the beautiful network you and everything living are a part of and there is nothing more powerful than that.
